Taste of London - Maya Jane Coles
Maya Jane Coles is a producer DJ from london. To me her tracks are reminiscent of the 'deep house' music produced in the early nineties by groups such as Deep Dish. Coles updates that sound with bouncing oscillations and dirtier sounding baselines which meld nicely to catchy tech house cadences. This is some serious ammunition for late night gun-slingin' clubbers. I think I just inspired myself to go get weird. Be sure to purchase these tracks

SPACE DIMENSION CONTROLLER
Have you ever fantasized of floating through space, in the galaxy's swankest lounge, sipping a cosmic martini while flirting with a couple celestial hotties? Visiting us from "Mickrosector-50" sometime in the 4th millennium, Jack Tiraquon's Space Dimension Controller brings us a unique blend of acid jazz and deep house that Jack has aptly dubbed "Galactic Funk." It is reminiscent of early house music in feel but with a more contemporary, less minimal sound. It's hard punchy bass lines and funky beats, give it drive while 100's of little sounds and melodies going on around them blend into a dreamy, erotic, electro-space odyssey! Tuesday, October 19, 2010

Mount Kimbie
Mount Kimbie is somewhere in between Detroit Techno and Dub-step, or maybe the perfect blend of. The music beats with an African heart, that subtly underlies the complex soundscapes made with modern technology. It's deep and soulful at its core with intertwining motifs of optimism, scratching at its outer edges, which creates a large musical dimension in which your mind is invited in to explore. The whole time the hypnotic beat slowly lifts away your self awareness, leaving you contently bouncing back and forth in your seat, marinating in some Mount Kimbie!Monday, October 11, 2010
Indian Summer - Tycho
Street Vibes
J Dilla is a Detroit born hip-hop producer who tragically passed at the young age of 32. Jay , as he is also known, is considered by many as one of the most influential Hip Hop producers of his time. The collection of songs below came of his final album "Donuts" released three days before his death.DETROIT BEATDOWN

“Detroit Beatdown” is named after a slowed-down, raw but groovy, deep and jazzy soul driven artistic adaptation of Detroit dance music. The motor city touts the claim to being the birth of “techno” (keeping sure the distinction between ‘techno’ and ‘electronic music’) and these guys hearken back to the glory days with this mix. However, it is the unique cross-genre exploration which represents the creative pulse in Detroit’s current electronic underworld that is perfected here. These are the types of sounds heard at funky late night after-parties. The trio of Mike Clark, Norm Talley and Delano Smith keep your head bouncing and your brain stimulated.

KOOP - Come to Me
The above video is for the song "Come to Me" off of the Swedish jazz duo's album Koop Island. Koop makes there music by taking thousands of old jazz sample and reassembling them, then putting atmospheric synth sounds and sultry singing to the the music a very easygoing yet seductive mood!

Serve On Ice
Cold Busted Records happened almost by accident. Label owner, DJ Vitamin D, asked then "house" producer Gramtik to release a bunch of sample based trip hop made as a teenager. The release, Street Bangerz Vol. 1, was a hit and spearheaded the labels rise. The third edition of the Street Bangerz series was just recently released along side a cornucopia of great EPs from up and coming artists. The music is fresh and contemporary while maintaing the soul of its roots. The style ranges from abstract, jazzy electronica to instrumental hip-hop to deep house, while always staying true to the Cold Busted nature, super chill. Will Calcutt

Ghostland Observatory

I saw these guys (yes there is another human rocking out back in the fog) at DEMF a couple weeks ago and they were amazing. They controlled the red bull stage with their intense energy and presence, plus they had some friggin' sweet lights. The duo has a few albums, but hasn't released anything since their 2008 album "Robotique Majestique". My two favorite songs, "Sad Sad City" and "Piano Man", are off their 2006 release, "Paparazzi Lightning".Sad Sad City-Ghostland Observatory

A Short Rant on the Four Relational Seasons of Michiganders
Spring
- The warmer weather starts to melt the stagnate frost of your winter relationship.
- The need for warmth and comfort in the bitter days of winter is replaced by a longing for freedom and newness inspired by the possibilities symbolized by spring.
- Winter’s hibernation-like relationships are pruned off and the individual blossoms with possibility.
- No matter the depth of the love you have for each other, something in your DNA--or your sex organs--begins to stir. Many manage to fight this biological urge to cut loose, and just as many resent themselves for it when their partner breaks it off first.
- Suddenly you look around and feel as through you’ve been dropped off in downtown LA. People are beautiful, healthy, and tan. Gone are the days of pasty legs and sullen smiles. And as the world becomes beautiful, we feel we must do the same.
- Guys and girls alike hit the gym and tanning salon to ensure that they are in top form for the countless shirt-and-pant-less situations they will no doubt encounter throughout the summer.
- It is a time for shedding the old, and preparing for the new.
Summer
- Mating season.
- May, June, and July are characterized by quick, passionate flings and more often than not, feelings of faux true love.
- The thrill of a late night rendezvous with a mate quickly becomes more meaningful than the care and compassion we enjoyed during the winter months.
- Every new relationship enjoys a honeymoon phase during the summer months.
- The endless string of concerts, parties, camping trips, road trips, festivals, bonfire, lakes, boats, and booze will combine to make any relationship seem like the best you’ve ever had.
- Whether you choose to stick with one pure summer mate, or you opt for seizing as many opportunities as you can, summer is time for freedom and recklessness, and thus, summer romances are untamed and almost always short lived, but are absolutely always fun and worthwhile.
Fall
- August marks a change. Our bodies sense the winter months ahead and our nesting tendencies kick in—it’s time for a new mate.
- At this point, you will decide to stick with the summer fling for the temporary long haul, or, you may find yourself scrambling to lock something down before the temperature drops below 50 degrees.
- Skirts and shorts change to jeans and cords. Tanks and tees change to sweaters and hoodies. Aimless sex drive becomes focused pursuit.
- Fall lends its self to romance: Strolls through an orange forest, trips to the cider mill, movies, football games, sweatshirts and blankets. As the summer slowly burns out, we sift through the ashes for something to hold onto; something to entertain and comfort us when the world goes dark and cold.
Winter
- For most, hibernation is now in full effect.
- If you were unable to find a suitable mate by fall’s end, you will join the rest of the laggards as they fight their way to the bar through wind, snow, ice, and Arctic temperatures, in hopes of stumbling upon someone to nest with for at least one night, and hopefully more.
- All we really want during this season is someone who likes the way we look in nasty ass sweatpants and our favorite hoodie… maybe even a snuggy if you’re really lucky. In fact, if you find someone who likes the way you look in a snuggy, drop everything and propose.
- We want to get dressed up for dinner, then come home, throw on our slippers, crack a bottle—or box depending on your mutual budget—of wine and watch a different movie every night.
- We want to meet our mate’s family for Sunday brunch, and be sure to stop by on thanksgiving and Christmas. We want to seal our love with a kiss on New Year’s eve, hoping all the while that when the ice starts to melt we’ll both still feel the same; though odds are, we won’t.
The bottom line is that you should enjoy whatever you have while you have it, and be equally prepared to let it go at the same time. Because if there's one thing I've learned, it's that love is-- more often than not-- a fleeting occurrence; one that does not last more than it's scheduled time no matter how hard you try to preserve it. So have fun this summer. Let go of whatever is holding you back and just be free, joyous, and pure. Do not burden yourself with anything except the possibility that you are not enjoying your time ENOUGH!
And if you ever get down on yourself about some outcome that you were so sure of, just remember this...
While we can never be certain that a season's romance will last, we can be sure that regardless of the outcome, there's always next season.

DISCO 2

HEALTH is a noise-rock band from LA consisting of BJ Miller, Jake Duzsik, John Famiglietti, and Jupiter Keyes. The band has steadily been releasing albums since 2007 with their record label, Lovepump United. Recently the band said they will be releasing a their fourth album, a remix album titled HEALTH//DISCO2, this summer (2010). The album, HEALTH//DISCO2 features remixes of songs off of their 2009 album, GET COLOR, by artists like Crystal Castles, CFCF, Small Black , and Pictureplane; the new remix album also features an all new, non-remixed HEALTH song, "USA Boys".
"USA Boys" is a very interesting song to me, I really like it, it's just an unexpected direction for HEALTH to be going in, but I think the song shows a lot of growth and maturity within the band's writing.
HEALTH-USA Boys
HEALTH//DISCO2 is truly an amazing album, one that I think even people who don't really like the harshness that HEALTH can sometimes bring to the table will enjoy. That being said it was really hard for me to pick my favorite songs off this album, but the decision had to be made, you can download the full album by clicking on the album art above.

Square Hammers

Stepdad began last summer when Ultramark and Cobrazebra started writing songs in their Chicago apartment. In April 2010, the band released their Ordinaire EP following overwhelming support from friends. Stepdad has since relocated to Grand Rapids, MI where they will be performing this Thursday, 5/20/10, at The DAAC as part of Midwest Fest, a festival in which Ultramark has performed 3 years in a row.
The first song I heard by this Midwest pair was "Baby Hammers", and I immediately thought of the first time I heard Passion Pit, just a driving beat topped off with a melody made out of bubbles and giggles.
Stepdad-Baby Hammers
"Squares" is another great song off this EP, it's the epitome of happy, and with a chorus like "...everything's ok!", I dare you not to smile when you listen to this track.

Ratatat
For those of you who are not familiar with this New York duo, be emabarrassed... what have you been listening to?
Ratatat consists of guitarist, Mike Stroud, and bassist, synthesizer, and producer, Evan Mast. LP4, Ratatat's fourth studio album released on XL recordings, is set to release on June 8th. The album is a follow up to the duo's 2008 album, LP3; actually, much of LP4 was recorded during many of the same sessions that produced LP3.
LP4 features the same in-your-face guitar riffs seen on previous releases from this Brooklyn -based duet, but it incorporates other more worldly influences as well.

...in to the dark rift...
Picturplane - Goth Star
The second video off the same album was directed by Thomas Stemrich. The song, "Trance Doll", is a banger with the occasional breaks for ethereal dreaming. The video, is a completely different story; watching this video gives me the same nervous feeling I get when I realize I'm going to have to take a shit at a gas station.
Pictureplane - Trance Doll
Dark Rift is a great album, one that you can listen to all the way through, it has few if any weaknesses. However, if I had to pick a favorite song off this masterpiece it would definitely be "Cyclical Cyclical (Atlantis)". It's the shortest song on the album and it always leaves me wanting more. The driving beat and hopscotch melody is like running through a super mario level as fast as you can after you get the star!
Pictureplane - Cyclical Cyclical (Atlantis)
Pictureplane's live performance was a blast to say the least. The only downside to his show was that he didn't play the title track of this album! When the song was requested, he simply responded with "I don't know how to play that one live yet."

Unusual Spring and the End of Emptiness
Springtime is usually associated with passion, reproduction, fertilization, coitus, pollination, flirtation, and sexual imagination. If you have been reading this little blog at all then you might expect some musings on the latest fling. Well, for myself at least, this spring is ushering in a whole new set of realities. I fear that there has been a shift deep in the abyss of my soul. A new paradigm has arisen. Sometimes life makes you aware of the good things that you have. Life reveals you to yourself in some way beyond the simple pettiness of most relationships we concern ourselves with in everyday life. Call it luck, or a blessing, or what have you. It's more like taking a deep breath.

A Bit About Seduction
I went out last night and looked around at everybody in town. Cars lined the streets. It was 10 pm. A few of the pubs already had lines out the door. People were drinking and dancing everywhere. It's just any old Saturday, no special holiday to speak of. What brings everyone to the bars and clubs and downtown? Sure people are going out for birthdays or to meet a friend or for girls night out. Yet, they all go to the same place, where there are hordes of other people their age, getting loose and trying to look good. At the baseline, everyone has to be there for the same reason.

your last relationship
In my recent experience, I have come to the realization that my prior relationship always somehow structures my attitude about what I’m currently seeking. It’s both a simple concept and often misconstrued phenomenon. If you were with a clinger, you will probably naturally gravitate toward someone who is more independent. And vice versa, the flighty and emotionally unavailable partner may will likely give way to someone a little more dependent in a relationship. It seems that we look to seek something new whether consciously or not. Even if things ended well with someone and you’re not actively trying to meet a new type of person, then just what makes a new person refreshing? Obviously, nobody wants a carbon copy of a past lover— might as well just die with your memories at that point. In this piece, I will use my own experience as a point of departure for constructively considering a past relationship in the context of a current or future one.
