...in to the dark rift...

Pictureplane's recent album, Dark Rift, was featured on Pitchfork.com and the first single, "Goth Star", made it to their "Top Tracks of 2009" list. "Goth Star" features a sample from Fleetwood Mac's "Seven Wonders" which includes dreamy Stevie Nicks vocals, and the video, directed by Sterling Crispin, pays hommage to this. Before he played this live, he dedicated it to "People who live in dilapidated buildings", a reference to the warehouse where he not only made a name for himself, but also lives, Rhinoceropolis, in Denver, CO?

The second video off the same album was directed by Thomas Stemrich. The song, "Trance Doll", is a banger with the occasional breaks for ethereal dreaming. The video, is a completely different story; watching this video gives me the same nervous feeling I get when I realize I'm going to have to take a shit at a gas station.

Dark Rift is a great album, one that you can listen to all the way through, it has few if any weaknesses. However, if I had to pick a favorite song off this masterpiece it would definitely be "Cyclical Cyclical (Atlantis)". It's the shortest song on the album and it always leaves me wanting more. The driving beat and hopscotch melody is like running through a super mario level as fast as you can after you get the star!

Pictureplane's live performance was a blast to say the least. The only downside to his show was that he didn't play the title track of this album! When the song was requested, he simply responded with "I don't know how to play that one live yet."

SUMMER PRELUDE

Here's three new tracks I'm really diggin' right now.

The first is off of Play Me Records courtesy of up and coming artists Mike Balance and Lea Luna. It's a rockin' tune in the Indie Dance mode with a driving electro bassline that is sure to get your feet moving and head a-banging. The lyrics are rather appropriate for the spring season!

Next up is a track off a one of my favorite record labels of the moment, "The Drum Poet Community." The Track is your paradigm classic "House" track, with a soulful hook put over a simply addicting groove.

This last track is from a Canadian duo by the name of Cobblestone Jazz. Its a melodic beat that reminds me of watching the sunset after a long day of relaxing at the beach. It has a samba groove with subtle jazz riffs and hypnotic vocals.

Unusual Spring and the End of Emptiness

Electrelane- Cut and Run- I think my mysterious Other wrote this song to me in a past life.  The vibe is cheery, redemptive, honest.  Good melodic Indie tune.

Springtime is usually associated with passion, reproduction, fertilization, coitus, pollination, flirtation, and sexual imagination.  If you have been reading this little blog at all then you might expect some musings on the latest fling.  Well, for myself at least, this spring is ushering in a whole new set of realities.  I fear that there has been a shift deep in the abyss of my soul.  A new paradigm has arisen.  Sometimes life makes you aware of the good things that you have.  Life reveals you to yourself in some way beyond the simple pettiness of most relationships we concern ourselves with in everyday life.  Call it luck, or a blessing, or what have you.  It's more like taking a deep breath.

Inhuman Communication

It’s 11:30 am on a Tuesday. I’m on the toilet battling last night’s dinner, when suddenly my phone vibrates with a new text message. It’s a girl I met last Friday night. We’d hit it off quite well, and I’d asked her if she’d like to go out sometime.

“Hey! What’s up, stranger!? ;) “ , she writes. Hmmm, how to respond?
